It started as a child seeing my grandmother and other family members take care of my uncle, who was transitioning from cancer. As a child, I saw all my family members come together to take care of someone that they loved and were preparing to go to their eternal resting place. I understood at an early age and never questioned. I don’t feel like I chose it. It chose me! From that day on, the family would come together as a unit and take care of the family members at the end of life. As an adult, it was normal for the family to care for one another because I knew one day it would be my turn to care for a loved one.

Both of my parents got sick. Then it got scary, not knowing the outcome, diagnosis, what the diagnosis was, medications, side effects from the medications, having to make hard decisions, and the best decisions for them and their health. I was eager to learn to give them the best care. It all started with discharge planning. Could they be alone?

Who was going to take care of them inside the home? How were things going to be done while at work? After that it was no doubt in my mind how it was going to get done. Me the decision maker, the caregiver, the nurse, the nutritionist, what was

already instilled in me as a child. Watching my grandmother surround her only son daily, aiding her child. I couldn’t imagine how hard and heartbreaking to bring someone into this world and have to prepare for them to leave forever. I vow to give every client the same care as she gave her son, to treat everyone with love, and give them the best care.
